This is a review of Canninghill Square, an upcoming integrated development in Clarke Quay and at the fringe of Singapore’s Central Business District (CBD) and Orchard Road. Spanning an area of 12,925.4 sq m, it will comprise two residential towers offering some
696 residential units, a commercial component, an “upper midscale” hotel with 460 to 470 rooms, and a 192-unit serviced residence

About Canninghill Piers & Canninghill Square

Canninghill Piers (residential) and Canninghill Square (commercial) will occupy the site of the former Liang Court Shopping mall, Hotel
Novotel Clarke Quay and serviced residence Somerset Liang Court. The site enjoys magnificent and unblocked views of the iconic
Singapore River and Fort Canning Park rich in history and a vibrant nightlife.

The development will be undertaken by two of Singapore’s real estate heavyweights in a 50:50 joint venture – City Development Ltd
(CDL) and Capitaland Ltd.

CDL hospitality Trusts (CDLHT) will own the hotel to be operated by Marriott International under the Moxy brand, while Ascott
Residence Trust (Ascott Reit) will take ownership of the 192-unit serviced apartment and will retain its Somerset branding. The
development is targeted to open in phases from 2024.

Along with the redevelopment, the consortium will also rejuvenate the river promenade next to the integrated development, in line with
the Urban Redevelopment Authority’s Draft Master Plan 2019 to enhance the area’s vitality.

Site Location of Canninghill Piers – At the Heart of Entertainment

Canninghill Piers lies in the heart of Clark Quay, which is just next to Boat Quay, one of Singapore’s four Historical Districts. In the late 19 century, the area was the centre of trade and commerce. “Tongkangs” (bumboats) loading and unloading their cargoes from the warehouses along Clarke Quay used to be a common sight.

But today, it has been transformed into a bustling destination filled with a colourful kaleidoscope of restaurants, wine bars, entertainment spots and retail shops. Singapore River

Canninghill Piers overlooks the Singapore River, which meanders through Boat Quay, Clarke Quay and Robertson Quay, and provides the central artery for the area’s vibrant nightlife scene. But the river offers its visitors more than just a picturesque destination for food and drinks. It also offers boat tours where they cruise up and down the entire length of the river. Traversing from one end at Marina Bay to the other end at Robertson Quay, these boat rides offer many interesting sights along the way.

Fort Canning Park is an iconic hilltop landmark in Singapore that has witnessed several historical events. The hill was previously home to 14th-century kings’ palaces and served as the Far East Command Centre and British Army Barracks. The decision to surrender Singapore to the Japanese on 15 February 1942 was also made on the hill, in the Underground Far East Command Centre, commonly known as Battle Box.

Today, Fort Canning Park features nine historical gardens – the Pancur Larangan, Artisan’s Garden, Sang Nila Utama Garden, Jubilee Park, Raffles Garden, First Botanic Garden, Farquhar Garden, Spice Garden and Armenian Street Park.

The park was originally known as Bukit Larangan, or ‘Forbidden Hill’
in Malay. The 18-hectare park now boasts a plethora of activities, ranging from historical artifacts to outdoor lawns for concerts, as well

Besides Fort Caning Park, Canninghill Piers also enjoys proximity to two national gardens – the Singapore Botanic Gardens and Gardens by the Bay.

Singapore Botanic Gardens – Established in 1859, it is the oldest garden in Singapore. Covering an area of 74-hectares, it was inscribed as a UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) World Heritage Site on 4 July 2015.

Today, its mission includes providing botanical and horticultural support for the nation’s greening plans, a centre for plant taxonomic and biodiversity research, as well as a recreational and educational attraction.

Canninghill Piers is located just next to the Fort Canning MRT station (Downtown Line). It is also a short walk to the Clark Quay MRT station (about 10 minutes).
